AC, DC, MC and IC Lines in Astrocartography

Almaty holds my Moon IC line. That city is where I was born. Calgary holds my Moon MC line, the city I moved to at 24. Twelve hours of time difference still sit between them. Same Moon. Two different angles, and two lives that share almost nothing.

My name is Grigor. Fifteen years of astrology study sit behind this page, most of the recent ones inside astrocartography specifically. The angle question arrives in almost every email. People open a map, find four lines for one planet, then want to know why. So this page walks the four angles one at a time. Then the IC and MC comparison. Abbreviations on a printed map come last. Wider context lives on the astrocartography pillar.

What the Four Angles Actually Are

Four points anchor every natal chart. Astrologers call them the angles. They matter more than most beginners expect.

The Ascendant sits on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. Its opposite, the Descendant, sits on the western horizon. The Midheaven marks the highest point overhead. Underneath your feet, the Imum Coeli closes the chart at the bottom.

Two axes, then. One horizontal, one vertical.

Each angle runs a department of life. First house on the AC, covering the body and the self. Seventh house on the DC, covering partnership. Tenth house on the MC, covering work and public standing. Fourth house on the IC, covering home and family.

Clients ask me which planet is the best one to live on. Wrong question, in my experience. A planet only tells you what shows up. The angle tells you where in your life it lands.

How Angle Lines Get Drawn on a World Map

Jim Lewis worked out the method in 1979 and built the first software for it. Every modern tool still runs on his math.

Take a single body from your chart. Find every location on Earth where it was rising at the second of your birth. Join those points into a curve. That is your AC line for that body.

Setting instead of rising gives the DC line. Standing at the top of the sky gives the MC line. Sitting at the lowest point below you gives the IC line. Ten planets, four angles. Forty planetary lines on a full astrocartography map.

Here is a detail no free calculator explains. MC and IC lines run dead straight, north to south, because the meridian is fixed by longitude. AC and DC lines curve. They bend across the latitudes and can loop strangely near the poles. Look at any astrocartography map and you can tell the two families apart instantly.

Birth time drives the accuracy of all of it. Planets shift roughly one degree every four minutes. Ten minutes of error moves a line a few hundred kilometers, which can be the difference between two cities.

The band of influence runs roughly 300 miles either side of the drawn line. Astrologers argue about that number, though. I have watched effects reach farther in one chart and fade early in another. Planet meanings themselves sit on the line meanings reference.

The Four Angles, One at a Time

Each angle deserves its own read. One body behaves like four different planets across them.

The AC Line, or Ascendant

Toronto carries a challenging Ascendant line in my chart. I spent quite a bit of time in that city. Challenging is still the polite word for how it felt.

Your AC line changes how people meet you. Appearance, first impressions, physical energy, the version of you that walks into a room. Venus on the Ascendant and strangers find you easy to like, with beauty and confidence reading higher than usual. Saturn on the Ascendant and people read you as older and more serious than you are.

Some people love the effect. Others describe it as wearing a costume they never chose. Both reactions are common, so neither one surprises me anymore.

Montreal never happened for me. For years I wanted to go, then hesitated every single time. Now I look at where my lines fall and the hesitation makes more sense than it used to.

The DC Line, or Descendant

Victoria sits on my Sun DC line. I loved that place immediately and I still do. Vancouver I visited several times without ever forming the same attachment.

The Descendant is the partnership angle. Marriage, business partners, close relationships, open conflict too. A planet on your DC line describes who you attract there rather than who you become. That distinction matters, and most template interpretations skip it.

People report meeting someone within weeks of arriving on a strong DC line. I have also watched a DC line surface an argument that had been waiting quietly for years. Harmony is one possible outcome. Confrontation is the other.

A trip to Mexico with my former fiancee landed us in a bay sitting in Venus DC territory. More on Venus angles sits on the Venus line page, and the Sun angles on the Sun line page.

The MC Line, or Midheaven

Calgary is my Moon MC city. Nine years there now.

The Midheaven is the career and reputation angle. Tenth house. What the public sees when it looks at you.

Whatever sits on your MC line moves into your visible life. Jupiter on the Midheaven and opportunities arrive in public, with growth showing up faster than you planned for. Saturn on the Midheaven and the climb runs slow, then holds permanently.

Ambitious people gravitate to MC lines without knowing the lines exist. That is the pattern I notice most in charts. My own Moon on the Midheaven means my work stays emotional and domestic in flavor. Printed maps of people’s homes and lives. It fits better than I would like to admit. More on that theme sits in the career decisions piece.

The IC Line, or Imum Coeli

Almaty again. Born on a Moon IC line, in a family where home was the loudest thing in the house.

Imum coeli means the bottom of the sky. Fourth house. Home, family, roots, the private floor of a life that nobody photographs.

The IC line is the most underrated angle in astrocartography. People chase MC lines for the work they want, then wonder why the city never feels like anywhere they belong.

Saturn and Neptune both run close to my Calgary IC. Nine years in and the description holds. The house takes constant work. Sleep there is unusually deep. The Saturn line page covers that weight in more depth.

Istanbul carries my Jupiter IC line. I got engaged there, on a rooftop where west and east connect. Roots and expansion in the same place, which is a strange combination to stand inside.

IC vs MC: Which Line Matters More

People ask me this in three or four different wordings every month. Neither line wins.

They sit on one axis, 180 degrees of longitude apart. The MC line asks what you build in public. Your IC line asks where you sleep well. Different questions, so a ranking between them makes no sense.

My own chart happens to run the comparison as a natural experiment. Moon IC over Almaty. That same Moon takes the MC over Calgary. Family was the whole world in the first city. Work is the whole world in the second.

Choose by season, is my read. Building something visible, take the MC. Recovering, raising kids, writing something long and slow, take the IC.

Reading the Angle Abbreviations on Your Map

Software vendors do not agree on the letters. That still trips up more beginners than any other part of the map.

AC, AS and ASC all mean the Ascendant. DC, DS and DSC all mean the Descendant. MC is the Midheaven everywhere. IC is the imum coeli everywhere. A label reading SA MC means Saturn on the Midheaven line, so the planet glyph comes first and the angle follows.

Color carries more information than letters on the maps I print. Moon is blue on every one of them. I know which line I am looking at before I read the glyph at all. The full reference sits on the symbols and glyphs page.

Where Two Angle Lines Cross

Kensington Road in Calgary is where my Venus line meets my Sun line. I met my former fiancee in a coffee shop on that corner. The building is still standing.

Crossings still run louder than single lines. Two planets, two angles, one location.

The crossing of MC and ASC gets asked about constantly. One planet lands on your career angle while another lands on your identity angle in the same place. Public visibility plus a shift in how people read you. Loud, though not automatically lucky.

A city with no line running through it is not a dead end either. The midpoint between two lines still works. I spent a year hunting a barbershop on that principle and it held up. Applying the angles to actual cities is the job of the best places to live guide.

How I Print the Angles on a Map

Every angle line gets its own weight and color on the maps I make. I develop them and print them myself, which is still the part of this work I enjoy most.

Digital maps run $179. Printed maps run $269 at 24 by 36 inches. Both together, with the global and domestic maps included, run $449 as a bundle. You can see all of it on the Astrotopographer store.

No certification exists in astrocartography. There is no licensing body either, because the field is too new and far too small for one. What sits behind these maps instead is fifteen years of study and every published book on the subject. That shelf is even shorter than you would think.

Custom written reports run as a side service. I write each one by hand for the person asking. No calls, no readings, no sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IC line in astrocartography?

The bottom of your chart, drawn across the world. Imum coeli means the lowest point of the sky. Any planet sitting on your IC line colors home, family and the private half of life in those locations. It is the quietest of the four angles. Also the one people underestimate most.

What does MC mean in astrocartography?

Medium coeli, or Midheaven. Your MC line marks every place where a planet stood at the very top of the sky at your birth. Career, reputation, public role. That is the department it runs. Straight vertical lines on the map are always MC or IC.

What does AC mean in astrocartography?

Ascendant. Your AC line runs through the locations where a planet was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It shapes how you come across in those places rather than what happens to you there. Some software writes it as AS or ASC, though the point is identical.

What is the DC line in astrocartography?

The exact opposite of your AC line. Descendant, sometimes written DS or DSC. Partners, close relationships and open conflict all live here. My Sun DC runs through Victoria. I have never once left that island in a bad mood.

Does the IC line matter more than the MC line?

Neither one outranks the other. They sit on the same axis, 180 degrees apart. Your MC line builds the public life. The IC line builds the private one. Pick by what the next few years of your life are actually for.

What is the crossing of MC and ASC in astrocartography?

A place where one planet’s MC line meets a different body’s Ascendant line. Two angles firing at one location. Career visibility arrives alongside a change in how people read you. Crossings run stronger than single lines, so treat them as loud rather than lucky.

Do my angle lines move if I relocate?

They never move. Your natal chart freezes at birth like a film negative exposed to light once. Moving changes which line you are standing on, nothing more. A relocation chart is a separate tool, and it recalculates the whole birth chart for new coordinates.

How wide is the influence of an angle line?

Roughly 300 miles either side is the working number. Astrologers still disagree about it. I have watched an angle reach much farther in one chart and stop early in another. Treat the band as a gradient rather than a border on a map.

Can I find my four angle lines for free?

Free calculators still draw all four accurately enough. What they will not give you is the meaning for your own chart. Midpoints stay missing too. Free tools are good for the visual, then somebody has to tell you what the lines mean for you specifically.

Does the Midheaven reveal my life purpose?

Not purpose. Career direction, closer to it. My MC line marks where strangers notice my work.

What house is associated with the IC?

The fourth. Home, roots, ancestry, the floor nobody sees. Your IC line carries fourth-house weight into every city it crosses.

How is the Midheaven calculated?

Your birth time and longitude do it. The meridian overhead at that moment fixes the point. Software handles the arithmetic.

The Angle Decides the Story

Four lines per planet. One body, four different lives, depending on which angle it lands on in the city you are looking at.

Astrocartography rewards people who read the angle first and the planet second. That order took me years to trust.

I should probably go to Jamaica just to record how that Ascendant line actually feels. We will see.
