Astrocartography Line Meanings: A Quick Reference for Every Planetary Line

Seven months of trying to book one barbershop in Calgary. Always full.

That shop sits on my Venus line. Two others near it stay booked out weeks ahead as well. My worst haircuts of the past five years all happened away from that line. A couple of them were expensive salons. Nothing mystical about how I worked it out. I tested barbershops for a year.

People search astrocartography lines meaning and land on pages stacked with adjectives. Expansive and transformative, with nothing you can actually act on.

Fifteen years of studying astrology. The paper map still hangs on my wall instead of a browser tab. Every line on it carries two pieces of information. Each planet says what kind of experience a place tends to produce. The letter beside it says how that experience reaches you. Most free tools draw the lines and stop there.

Below sits the whole reference. Ten planets, four angles, plus the parts almost nobody explains. Starting with what to do about a line that lands in open water.

What a Planetary Line Means on an Astrocartography Map

I was born in Almaty. My Moon IC line runs close to it. At 24 I moved to Calgary. The Moon MC line runs through that city. Those two places sit almost twelve hours apart on the clock. Same planet, opposite angle, opposite side of the world. Mind blown, the first time I plotted it.

So what is a line, mechanically? Take the moment you were born. Every planet stood somewhere overhead at that instant. Others sat on the horizon or underfoot. Draw every spot on Earth where one planet was exactly rising. Then do the same for setting, for culminating, for the lowest point of the sky. Four lines per planet, stretched across a world map.

That is the whole trick. Your birth chart, projected onto a globe.

We did not invent any of it. Gravity worked before Newton described it. Electricity ran before anyone named it. Jim Lewis mapped the technique in the late 1970s and attached the word astrocartography to it. Astrologers had been recalculating charts for new cities long before him, though. That older practice still goes by relocation astrology. His contribution was the map. Longer history on the main astrocartography guide, plus a plainer starting point at what astrocartography is.

The Two Halves of Every Astrocartography Line Meaning

Two people can both have Venus running through Lisbon and describe completely different years there. Same planet in both charts. The angle was not.

Ten planetary lines give you the subject matter. Four angles give you the delivery. Miss that second half and every line meaning collapses into vague adjectives. Most calculator pages hand you exactly that.

Angle letters sit right next to the glyph on any decent chart. AC, IC, DC, MC. Four letters, four separate jobs. Deeper treatment on the four angle lines.

The AC Line, or How a Place Changes You

Rising planets land here, on the angle astrologers call the ascendant. An AC line changes how you come across and how you feel inside your own skin. People notice the planet in you before you open your mouth. Mars on the AC reads as forceful. Neptune on the AC reads as hard to pin down.

The IC Line, or What Home Feels Like There

Lowest point of the sky, the root of the chart. IC lines describe private life, family, the feeling of the floor under you. Nobody outside your household sees this one operating. My own Moon IC sits near where I was born, which is not subtle.

The DC Line, or Who You Meet There

Setting planets, over on the descendant. A DC line shows up as other people. Partners and clients. Relationships of every kind sit on this angle, along with the ones who arrive and change the plot. Sun on my DC brought me Victoria, a city I still think about. Saturn on the DC brings demanding people instead.

The MC Line, or What the World Sees You Doing

Culminating planets, straight overhead at the midheaven. MC lines run career, reputation, the version of you that strangers can see. Career questions land here more than anywhere else on the chart. My Moon sits on the MC over Calgary, so my public life keeps circling family and home.

Astrocartography Line Meanings, Planet by Planet

Read what follows against your own past first. Somewhere significant happened to you. Find which line ran through that spot, then compare it against the meaning below. Calibration beats memorization every time. The readings sharpen once you have matched two or three real events to real lines.

Sun Line Meaning

Victoria pulled at me every single time I went west. My Sun DSC line crosses Vancouver Island. Partnership is the DSC reading. Vitality is what the Sun itself carries. Sun lines tend to put you in front of people rather than behind them. Confidence rises. So does the risk of burning hot on the ego side. More on the Sun line.

Moon Line Meaning

Home, family, the womb feeling of belonging. My Moon IC runs near Almaty, where I was born. The Moon MC runs through Calgary, where I live now, roughly the opposite side of the world. Bombay and Jaipur sit on almost the same Moon longitude as Almaty. I only noticed years afterward. Fertility work often points a couple toward the woman’s Moon line, which my coach taught and I have watched repeat since.

Mercury Line Meaning

I went to a small college in Calgary sitting between my Jupiter and Pluto lines. Big transformation there. Learned English properly. The city’s older university, though, sits on my Mercury line. Ideally I would have picked that one. Learning and libraries. Language, writing, short trips, the whole information side of life.

Venus Line Meaning

The Kensington Road coffee shop where I met my former fiancée sits on a Venus and Sun crossing. Building is still standing. Venus lines read as beauty, attraction, pleasure, the pull toward people you find lovely. First dates belong here. So does anything cosmetic. Seven months of failed barbershop bookings came off the same line. Detail on the Venus line.

Mars Line Meaning

My favorite mechanic works near the Calgary airport, right where Mars and Jupiter cross. He almost never leaves the shop. Mars covers energy, conflict, sport, metal, big mechanisms. Output rises on those lines. So does the temper. Useful for training. Less useful for a delicate negotiation.

Jupiter Line Meaning

I got engaged in Istanbul, on a rooftop where west and east meet. My Jupiter IC line runs through the city. Luck, expansion, teachers, generous timing, that is Jupiter. Hawaii carries my Jupiter MC. I went there instead of Jamaica. Accountants are worth finding on this line.

Saturn Line Meaning

Antalya kept pulling me back, more than once. That whole region of my map carries Saturn. Saturn lines feel heavier and slower, though heavy is not the same thing as bad. Structure gets built there. Discipline holds. My Saturn travels alongside Neptune near Calgary’s IC, structured and dreamy at once. Full page on the Saturn line.

Uranus Line Meaning

My Uranus line runs directly through Calgary International Airport. Aviation belongs to Uranus. That confluence is too clean to ignore. Sudden change, breakthroughs, restlessness, the urge to break a pattern. Uranus places rarely feel stable, but they do move things along.

Neptune Line Meaning

Sleep is the practical one. A bedroom on a Neptune line rests better than any other room in my apartment. Dreams, meditation, poetry, the softening of edges. That same softness blurs contracts and judgment, so I keep money decisions off Neptune.

Pluto Line Meaning

I opened a coffee shop at 67 14th Avenue in East Village, Calgary. Straight on my Pluto line. We spent everything we had. The next day it closed. A court case followed. We won it. The money never arrived. Pluto teaches transformation, which is a gentle word for what it does. Psychological death and rebirth. I still live plus or minus on that line.

Chiron, Lilith and the Lunar Nodes

Three more bodies show up on a full map. Chiron marks the wounded healer, the places where an old injury turns into something useful for other people. North Node lines pull you toward unfamiliar work and whatever you treat as your purpose. South Node lines feel like an old sweater, comfortable and slightly stuck. I have been to Belize once. My father’s family comes from Armenia. That North Node line connects both places, and the pull was there each time. Lilith stays the least agreed-upon body of all, so treat any confident Lilith reading carefully. Pages on Chiron and the lunar nodes.

What the Symbols and Colors on Your Chart Mean

Clients arrive with a screenshot and one question. Which of these symbols means what? The glyphs come straight out of natal astrology, unchanged. A circle with a dot is the Sun. Look for a crescent and you have the Moon. The mirror shape belongs to Venus. Mars carries the arrow.

Colors are a different story. Software picks them, not astrology. My own printed maps run the Moon in blue because I chose blue. Another program may draw the same line in green. Any page telling you that a red line means one fixed thing is guessing at software, not reading a chart. Full key on the symbols and glyphs page.

What an Astrocartography Line in the Ocean Means

Plenty of my own lines fall in water. So do plenty of yours, since oceans cover most of the globe.

An oceanic line is not wasted. It still makes landfall somewhere. Coastlines catch plenty of them. Cruise routes and island stops count as well. A line crossing open ocean three thousand miles from anywhere gives you nothing to act on, so skip it. Look at where that same line touches land north or south instead. My Jupiter line spends most of its length at sea, then clips Istanbul. That clip mattered more than the whole ocean stretch behind it.

How Close to a Line Is Close Enough

Most practitioners work with roughly 700 miles of influence, strongest inside the first 100. Tighter than that is what I use inside a city. Within a few blocks the effect is obvious to me. Fifty miles out it drops to a background hum.

Two lines meeting produce a crossing, which reads much louder than either line alone. Parans are the horizontal version, where two planets hit angles at the same latitude. My coach warned me off Pluto and Uranus parans specifically. I pass that along as information rather than fear. Midpoints work too. My home sits between my Sun and Jupiter lines. No hairdresser sat exactly on the Venus line, so I found the midpoint instead.

When a Line Meaning Does Not Match Your Life

Sometimes it will not match. Pretending otherwise helps nobody.

Birth time is the first suspect. Four minutes of error moves the AC and MC lines about a degree of longitude. Whole cities shift. Sun and Moon lines stay usable without an exact time. The angle lines do not.

Free calculators are the second suspect. They draw the geometry and stop, which is fine for a visual. None of them can tell you which of your forty lines matters this year. Start with a free chart by all means, then get the meaning somewhere else. The order to read them in sits on how to read your map.

Third, nobody in this field is certified. No certifying body exists for astrocartography. The field stays too small and too young for one, and astrology carries no license anywhere. Anyone selling you a credential is selling you a graphic. Judge the work instead. Do not believe me either. Go and test it on your own past.

Frequently Asked Questions

What line on astrocartography should you live on?

Depends what you want out of the next few years. Jupiter and Venus lines are the comfortable answers. Sun lines suit anybody building visibility. Moon lines suit family life and a settled sense of community. I would rather ask which line supports the decision in front of you than name one universal best.

How do I find my astrocartography lines?

Birth date, birth time, birth city. Feed those three into any astrocartography calculator and it draws your world map in about ten seconds. Accuracy of the birth time decides whether the angle lines can be trusted. Free versions give you geometry. Meaning is the part you add afterward.

What is the soulmate line in astrocartography?

No single soulmate line exists in the traditional material. Venus DC comes closest, since Venus rules attraction and the DC angle rules partners. Love questions land on those two more often than anywhere else. Sun DC runs a close second. My own Venus and Sun cross over the Calgary coffee shop where I met my former fiancée. So I hold that opinion for personal reasons.

Can astrocartography tell you where to live?

It narrows the list. Deciding still stays your job. Anybody claiming otherwise is overselling. Visas, family, work, money, all of that outranks a planetary line. What the map gives you is a reason to look at three cities rather than thirty. Longer treatment on best places to live.

Where should I live based on my birthday?

Your birth date alone draws a rough map. Then the exact time and the birthplace sharpen it. Sun sign lists that send every Taurus to Tuscany ignore the other nine planets. Mine puts a Moon over Calgary. Nobody else’s does. So start from your own chart rather than your sign.

How do I know where to move based on astrocartography?

Work backward first. Plot the places that already shaped you. See which planets ran through them. Then shortlist two or three cities you would actually move to. Crossings and parans narrow a wide band to one region. Local space lines narrow it further still.

What do the colored lines mean in astrocartography?

Whatever the software decided. Color is a display choice, not a meaning. Read the legend of whichever program generated your chart before trusting any color guide online. On my printed maps the color coding is mine. The eye finds a planet faster that way than it would with a numbered key.

What does a black line mean on an astrocartography map?

Usually Saturn, sometimes Pluto, in the default palette of common software. Black also gets used for parans and borders, which confuses people fast. Check the key first. A black line carries no special weight on its own.

Which lines matter most on a first read?

The ones running through places you have already lived. Start there. Calibrate the meanings against events you remember, then work outward toward places you are considering. Ten planets across four angles produce a lot of different lines. A first read that tries to cover all of them covers none of them.

Do I need a certification to interpret my own lines?

No such certification exists. Astrocartography has no certifying body, no exam, no diploma. I read every published book on the subject, and there are only a handful of them. Then I tested the lines against my own life for years. That is the available path. Anybody offering you a badge invented it themselves.

Keeping the Reference Where You Can See It

A browser tab closes. The map on my wall does not.

That is most of the reason I print them. Digital maps run $179 and cover your local lines plus a global one. Printed maps run $269 at 24 by 36 inches. The all-in-one bundle sits at $449 with digital and printed together, shipping included. You can order a map or keep working from a free chart. My part is to offer. Your part is to agree or refuse.

Meanwhile, go find the line that ran through the last place you loved. That one will teach you more about line meanings than this page did.
