What Is Astrocartography? A Plain-Language Definition

My first astrocartography reading left me with more questions than I walked in with. I paid another astrologer. Then I asked where my lines ran and what they meant for a move I was already planning. The answers stayed vague. So I bought the books and started working the charts myself. That was fifteen years ago. Now I develop and print these maps for other people, one order at a time, by hand. What follows is the plain version of what I wanted handed to me back then.

Astrocartography, Defined Without the Mysticism

A world map with your natal chart drawn across it. That is the astrocartography definition stripped to its frame. Your birth chart records where every planet sat at the minute you arrived. Astrocartography asks a second question. Where on Earth was Venus rising at that exact minute? Which coastline had Saturn straight overhead? Plot the answers as curves and you have your lines. Some people call the same discipline astrogeography, or locational astrology. Different label, one practice. The wider astrocartography guide goes deeper into the system. This page stays with the definition and the mechanics.

How Astrocartography Works, Step by Step

Three pieces of birth data carry the whole thing. Birth date. Exact clock time. Birth city. Time is the piece people underestimate. Four minutes of clock time shifts an angular line roughly one degree of longitude. Twenty minutes can move it clear across a state. Picture a film negative getting exposed. The shutter opens at your first breath. Whatever the sky held at that instant is what got printed. Software then pulls the ephemeris and projects those planetary positions onto a flat world map. Nothing gets invented at this stage. It is coordinate math, the same math a navigator has always used. No prediction happens anywhere in the calculation.

What the Lines on an Astrocartography Map Actually Mean

Every planet gives you four lines, not one. Free calculators still rarely explain that part properly. The planet tells you what kind of energy shows up in a place. Its angle tells you how that energy reaches you. Read both together, otherwise the map stays decorative.

The Ascendant (AC) Line

How a place makes you come across. Body, first impression, the version of you who walks into a room. One of my AC lines passes near Toronto. Challenging city for me. Quite a bit so, though I have never worked out how much of that came from the line.

The Descendant (DC) Line

Who shows up. Partners, clients, the people you keep bumping into. My Sun line crosses Victoria on the descendant. I loved that city far more than a short visit could account for. Partnership angle, and it behaved like one.

The Midheaven (MC) Line

Career, reputation, the public version of your work. My Moon MC runs through Calgary. I moved here at 24 and stayed.

The Imum Coeli (IC) Line

Home. Roots. The interior nobody else sees. My Moon IC sits near Almaty, Kazakhstan, my birth city. Almaty and Calgary fall almost exactly opposite each other, 12 hours apart on the clock. Same planet, opposite angle, opposite side of the world. That mirror is what stopped me laughing at astrology.

What Each Planet Line Carries

Ten planets plus a few extra points, each coloring a location differently. Sun lines run warm and visible. Moon lines feel like family and belonging. Mercury governs study and language and libraries. The older university in my city sits on my Mercury line. I picked the other one, without knowing. Venus covers beauty and attraction and love. Mars brings energy and metal and machinery, so my favorite mechanic works right where Mars crosses Jupiter near the airport. Jupiter means growth and expansion. Saturn is discipline. Boundaries, long-haul work, the slow reward. Saturn is also where health themes tend to sit. Uranus is sudden change and aviation. Mine runs directly through Calgary International Airport. Neptune softens a place into sleep and dreams. Pluto is transformation. That is the line I know best, and the full line meanings go through each one properly.

Where This Discipline Came From

Jim Lewis, working in the late 1970s. He took projection math that astrologers had been sketching by hand and turned it into a map a person could buy. Astro*Carto*Graphy was his trademark. The generic spelling is what everyone writes now. Gravity existed before Newton described it. Electricity ran before anybody named it. These lines were here whether or not somebody drew them. Nobody invented them. We just learned how to read them.

What Astrocartography Can Tell You, and What It Cannot

It will not give you a date. It will not name the person you meet. Anybody promising that is selling a different product. What you get instead is a shortlist of places worth taking seriously. Also a reason why certain cities always felt wrong to you. Twenty years ago nobody had Google Maps and we all got where we were going. Nobody drives to a new address without it now, though. Traffic ahead. The faster route. Road closures. That map still does not drive the car for you. Without one you move like a blind kitten. Try left, wall. Then right, wall. It is not scientifically proved. Astrology is not science by official labels. The confluences pile up too high for me to ignore, though. Do not believe me. Go and test it against your life.

Astrocartography Compared With Relocation Charts

Two tools, constantly confused for each other. The first projects your planetary positions onto the world and shows where each line runs. A relocation chart does something else entirely. It recalculates your whole natal chart for the new coordinates, house by house. I work with astrocartography. Plenty of people run both and compare the results. The relocation chart page covers that difference at length.

How I Read a Map, Zoom by Zoom

Global first. Then the country. Province or state next, then the city street by street, then the apartment, then the seat on the plane. Matryoshka dolls. One picture holds a smaller picture, which holds a smaller one again. The lines never move. Only the zoom changes. Then comes the step most people skip. Go back through your own history and mark where the big events happened. Check which line you were standing on at the time. That calibration is what turns generic planet meanings into your meanings, and reading your own map starts right there.

What Calibration Looked Like in My Own City

I opened a coffee shop at 67 14th Avenue in Calgary, sitting right on my Pluto line. Every dollar I had went into it. We closed the day after we opened. Then a court case followed. We won it and never saw the money. Pluto teaches transformation, which is a gentle way of saying it takes things apart first.

The lighter version runs through the same city. My Venus line clips a stretch of Calgary where two or three barbers work. All of them still booked solid, always. Seven months I chased one appointment. Best haircut of my life, in a shop that looked rough from the street. My worst five years of haircuts all happened off that line, fancy salons included.

Getting Your Own Astrocartography Map

Free calculators will draw your lines in about a minute. Astro-Seek and astro.com and a few others do it well enough. Good for the visual. They stop at the visual. No midpoints, no reading of your particular chart, nothing worth putting on a wall. Start with a free astrocartography chart by all means. Get a feel for where your lines fall already. I develop and print every one of these maps myself, so there is no factory in the middle. Digital sets run $179. Printed maps are $269, at 24 by 36 inches. The bundle carries both for $449, and the printed maps are what most people come for. Astrotopographer is the brand name. Grigor is the person behind it. That is me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does astrocartography mean in plain English?

Your natal chart, painted onto a map of the world. Planets that were rising or setting or standing overhead at your birth get drawn as lines across the globe. Stand near one of those lines and that planet gets louder in daily life. That is the whole meaning of it.

How does astrocartography work?

Birth date, exact clock time, birth city. Those three go into the software. An ephemeris supplies planetary positions for that moment. Those positions then get projected onto a world map as curves. Astrology based on birth time and location is exactly what this is, and the location half is the part most astrologers skip.

What is an astrocartography chart?

Same object as the map, different word for it. An astrocartography chart shows your planetary lines laid over geography rather than over a circular wheel. Most practitioners use chart and map interchangeably. I print mine as maps, because that is what people actually hang up.

Which lines should I look for first?

Start with anything crossing a place you already know well. Your home city. The city you grew up in. Somewhere a big event happened to you. Then match the line against the memory. That comparison teaches more in ten minutes than any general list of planet meanings.

What can astrocartography tell you about your life?

Where certain themes get amplified. Career visibility, relationships, study, health patterns, the feeling of home. It works well as a shortlist for a decision you were already weighing. As a fortune, though, it works badly. Opportunities show up as places to consider, never as promises.

Is astrogeography the same thing?

Mostly, yes. Astrogeography and locational astrology both describe mapping a chart onto the Earth. Astrocartography is the term that stuck in English after Jim Lewis. A few European astrologers use astrogeography for a related house-based system, so ask which one somebody means.

Can I use astrocartography without an exact birth time?

Partly. Planet-to-planet relationships in your birth chart hold up without a time. The four angle lines do not, since AC and MC positions move about one degree every four minutes. A birth certificate is the usual fix. Chart rectification with an astrologer is the slower one.

What does the Uranus line mean?

Sudden change, independence, anything that breaks a pattern. Aviation falls under Uranus too. Mine runs straight through the airport in my city, which I noticed years after I started flying out of it. Places on a Uranus line rarely stay boring. They rarely stay stable either.

Do I need to move for any of this to matter?

Moving is optional. Most of what I use the map for is small. Which neighborhood to take a meeting in. Where to book a haircut. Which city to visit before deciding anything permanent. Relocation is the biggest version of the question, never the only one.

Which planetary lines deserve attention first?

Distance decides most of it. A line running through the place you already live outranks one crossing a continent you will never visit. Then check which planet dominates your birth chart. It gets louder on the ground. Venus is not automatically kinder than Saturn.

Where should I live according to my birthday?

A birthday on its own answers nothing. Date without clock time produces no angle lines, so the map cannot narrow anything down. Add the time and the birthplace and a shortlist appears. I work through that shortlist on best places to live.

Is there such a thing as a strong Uranus placement?

In locational work, strong means angular. Uranus sitting on one of your four angles is the version people actually feel. Restlessness, mostly. Sign rulership matters far less here than the angle you are standing on.

Where should I travel using my own map?

Test a line before you commit to it. Book a week somewhere a Sun or Jupiter line crosses, then watch how the week goes. Cheap experiment. It beats another year of reading about the line instead.

One Map, A Lot of Small Decisions

People live perfectly well without any of this. They get where they are going. A road map or no road map, and it stays their call either way. I do not push. My part is to offer, theirs is to agree or refuse. I still live plus or minus on that Pluto line. Still transforming, apparently. Newcomers usually start with a free chart, then compare it against the other tools available.
