Astrocartography: How Your Planetary Lines Shape Where You Thrive
I lost a coffee shop. Won a court case. Then lost a best friend. All three events happened on my Pluto line. The coffee shop sat at 67 on 14th Avenue in East Village, Calgary. My home at the time was three blocks away, also on that same longitude. So was the spot where my business partner stopped answering his phone. Two and a half years together. We had built our trading account from fifteen hundred dollars each up to a hundred thousand.
That kind of pattern is not coincidence. Astrocartography is the part of astrology that explains why.
I am Grigor, and I have spent fifteen years studying this part of astrology. So far I have read every available book in the niche. Additionally I have taken every course I could find. Over those years I ran hundreds of charts. Most of them were my own, tested against events I already lived through, just to see if the planetary lines held up. They do, consistently. That repetition is what eventually built the confidence to develop and print the maps I now sell. Honestly, none of this is theoretical. Each line on your astrocartography map points to a real place on earth. You can stand there and feel the planet at work.
Astrocartography projects your birth chart onto a map of the world. Every planet in your chart becomes a line of influence across the globe. Each line you cross matters. The ones that run through your home city carry the weight of where you spend most of your time. Those overseas tell you what a place will likely feel like before you book the ticket. Below, this page walks you through what each of your lines means. Then how to read them. Finally how to use the map without giving up the rest of your judgment.
What Astrocartography Is, and Where It Came From
Astrocartography is locational astrology, sometimes called relocation astrology in older texts. The technique was developed by an American astrologer named Jim Lewis in 1979. He trademarked the name and built the first commercial software for it. The idea was simple. Every planet in a natal chart has a position in the sky at the moment of birth. Project those positions across the rotating earth and they trace planetary lines across the world map. Stand near one of them and the planet’s energy gets amplified. However, sit far from all of them and the energy of your birth city remains dominant.
Lewis was the first to systematize the technique. The astrocartography lines themselves existed long before that. Gravity existed before Newton wrote it down, after all. Similarly, electricity existed before the first textbook described it. We did not invent these lines. Instead, we learned how to read them.
A single astrocartography line affects roughly three hundred miles, or five hundred kilometers, on either side. That distance is the practical orb of influence. Closer in, stronger pull. Farther away, weaker. Sit a thousand kilometers from any of the lines and you mostly feel your natal chart again. Recalibrated to local time and geography. For most people that is fine. The astrocartography map matters most for the places where these lines actually run through your daily life.
Your full birth chart still applies wherever you go. So astrocartography does not replace it. Instead the map adds a geographic layer to a system you already have, even if you have never read the chart yourself. Additionally, the what astrocartography is page covers the definition in more depth for readers who want the longer version.
The Four Angle Lines That Run Through Every City
Each planet has four angle lines. They are called AC, IC, DC and MC. These come from the four corners of the natal chart wheel. Wherever the planet was at the moment of birth, those four positions become four separate threads across the world. So Mars is not one stripe. Instead, Mars is four. Same for every other planet. That is how a single chart produces up to forty angle lines globally. Furthermore, the AC, DC, MC and IC lines page breaks down each angle in detail.
The Ascendant (AC) Line
This is the self-line. Stand on your AC and the planet’s energy shows up in how you carry yourself, how you dress, how strangers read you. A Venus AC city makes you feel attractive and at ease in your skin. By contrast, a Saturn AC city makes you feel older, more cautious, more responsible than your age. So the AC is where the planet meets your body and your identity. Of all four angles, the AC is the most immediate.
The Imum Coeli (IC) Line
This is the foundation line. It runs along the bottom of the chart wheel, which means it touches the part of life that is private. Specifically home and family, sleep and the unconscious. I was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan. My Moon IC sits close to that city. Now I live in Calgary, where my Moon MC runs. Same planet, opposite angles. Mirror cities on opposite sides of the earth. Honestly, that is the kind of confluence in astrocartography you cannot read about and dismiss. You have to live through it.
The Descendant (DC) Line
This one is the partnership line. Whoever you become through close relationships, that is the part of yourself you meet on the DC. My Sun DC runs through Victoria, on Vancouver Island. I loved that island the first time I visited and could not say why. So the DC explains the why. Furthermore, people keep ending up in the same kind of relationship across different cities. Often that is a strong DC pattern they have not yet noticed.
The Midheaven (MC) Line
This is the visibility line. Specifically career and reputation, plus public-facing work. A Jupiter MC city tends to be the city where your work expands. By contrast, a Saturn MC city is where you build slow, structured authority. So the MC is what your professional life looks like from the outside. A Mars MC tends to attract competition and conflict around career visibility. Meanwhile a Venus MC tends to attract attention through pleasure-adjacent work.
A planet on one of these four angles is louder than the same planet running between angles. That is why people often pick up dramatic feelings when they move from one city to another. Even when the cities are only a few hundred miles apart. What shifted was the angle of the lines.
The Ten Planetary Lines in Astrocartography
Ten planets, each with four angles, give forty angle lines across the world map. Each description below covers the planetary character. Then the angle determines how it shows up. For a one-glance read of each celestial body, the line meanings reference is the quick reference.
Sun Line
This is the vitality line. You feel like yourself near it. Energy comes back. My Sun DC runs through Vancouver Island. The pattern repeats for other people on their Sun lines too. Their place is where the world stops draining them. Furthermore the Sun also carries authorship of your life. So a Sun MC city tends to be where your career visibly fits you. I have a friend who relocated his entire business to a Sun MC city in his late thirties. He described it as the first time work stopped feeling like performance. More on each angle of the Sun is on the dedicated Sun line page.
Moon Line
This thread carries home. Family vibes, kitchen-table feelings, the kind of belonging that does not require a reason. My Moon IC sits next to the city where I was born. Meanwhile my Moon MC runs through the city where I live now. Same body, mirrored angles. Also, I have spent time in Mumbai and Delhi and Jaipur. All three sit at roughly the same longitude as my birthplace. Every one of them felt strangely familiar. There is a use case astrologers in fertility-coaching circles know about. Difficulties on the woman’s side. The couple goes to her Moon line for a stretch. Read the full breakdown on the Moon line page.
Mercury Line
Mercury carries learning and writing. Language too, plus short trips and the small daily exchange of words. Calgary has a major old university on my Mercury astrocartography line. I did not go there. Instead I went to a smaller school called Mountain Trail. It sits between my Jupiter and Pluto lines. I had a major transformation there instead of a clean education. Looking back, the Mercury campus is where I should have studied. Mercury rewards anyone who walks into a classroom on it. Libraries, language schools, writing groups. So Mercury is for any place where words are the work.
Venus Line
Venus is for beauty and attraction. Soft pleasure, hair, meeting the person who softens your edges. I met my former fiancée in a coffee shop on Kensington Road, right on the crossing of my Sun and Venus. The same area also runs through where Calgary’s best haircuts have been hiding from me for years. I tested it. The hairdressers I trusted on my Venus line were always booked. Meanwhile the ones off the line, even at fancier salons, gave me the worst haircuts of my life. Furthermore, Venus is also where plastic surgery has the highest probability of going well. Detail and the full set of Venus subsections sits on the Venus line page.
Mars Line
Mars carries energy and sport. Conflict as well, plus physical work with metal or machines. My favorite mechanic in the city sits at the intersection of my Mars and Jupiter astrocartography lines near the airport. He does not advertise. People show up. I keep showing up. Furthermore, Mars is also where physical training works, where boxers find their best gyms, where a hike is the right hike. Mars on AC tends to make people more direct, sometimes more aggressive, often more honest. By contrast, Mars on MC tends to attract career conflict. The Mars line page covers each angle.
Jupiter Line
Jupiter is expansion. Bigger room, bigger conversations, bigger opportunities. My Jupiter IC runs through Istanbul, where I got engaged on a rooftop. It also runs through Bulgaria, where the copywriter who helped build my first website lives. I did not pick those cities for Jupiter reasons. Honestly, Jupiter picked them. Also, Jupiter is a great marker for accountants and lawyers. Anyone who needs the kind of expansive thinking that handles complexity well. The Jupiter line page covers what happens when Jupiter sits on each of the four angles.
Saturn Line
Saturn carries structure and discipline. Long work too, and the slow accumulation of competence. These places are not punishments, despite what older astrology textbooks suggest. They are the places where you grow up. My own Saturn sits near my Calgary IC, paired with Neptune. That pairing is part of why my life here has had both depth and a dreamy edge. Furthermore, Saturn on MC is where you build a reputation that lasts. Meanwhile, Saturn on DC is where you meet partners who become long-term. Often older than you in some meaningful way. Read more on the Saturn line page.
Uranus Line
Uranus carries sudden change and innovation. Aviation as well, and breaking patterns. My Uranus line runs directly through Calgary International Airport. Coincidence? Uranus rules aviation. The line that runs through my city happens to run through the city’s airport. That is the kind of confluence that stopped me from dismissing astrocartography. Also, Uranus is a strong marker for work involving disruption and technology. Rapid pattern-breaking as well. The Uranus line page goes deeper.
Neptune Line
Neptune is for sleep and dreams. Meditation, art, the soft edges of perception. A bedroom on a Neptune marker gives you the kind of sleep that resets a difficult week. Meanwhile, a studio on it gives you work that you did not know was in you. The challenge of Neptune is that it dissolves boundaries. Sometimes the right boundary. Often the wrong one. Furthermore, people in recovery often need to be careful around strong Neptune placements in their daily geography. More sits on the Neptune line page.
Pluto Line
Pluto carries psychological death and rebirth. Therefore it is the thread that transforms you, sometimes without asking. I lived the Pluto story on a single longitude in Calgary. Three losses on the same line in less than five years. One coffee shop in East Village. Then a court case I won but never collected on. Finally, my best friend. He turned off his phone and left for Texas with the rest of our trading account. Same May day I recorded my first Astrotopographer test video. Pluto does not punish. Instead, Pluto rewrites. The full breakdown is on the Pluto line page.
Chiron, the Lunar Nodes, and Paran Crossings
Beyond the ten planets, three more threads deserve attention.
Chiron is the wounded healer. Its lines mark where old pain becomes useful. The pain has to be processed first, but the energy tends to deliver the processing whether you ask or not. Furthermore, people who become coaches or therapists often have Chiron near a major angle. Teachers as well. See the Chiron line.
The Lunar Nodes are the North Node and South Node. Your North Node line shows the direction your life is asking you to grow. By contrast, the South Node is the place you came from, comfortable, sometimes too comfortable. My North Node runs near Belize, which is also where my father’s Armenian family threads back through. Two ancestral pulls on the same longitude. Karmic, in the working sense of the word. Read further on the lunar nodes page.
Parans are different. A paran is the latitude where two astrocartography lines cross at the horizon, even if the planets themselves are on different longitudes. The compound effect of two lines locking into the same latitude can amplify both. Or it can produce a hybrid effect neither carries alone. My first astrocartography teacher warned me about Pluto-Uranus parans specifically. Therefore, some compound crossings are genuinely worth avoiding. Read the paran lines guide next. Additionally, the midpoints guide covers the related concept. Midpoints are the halfway points between two lines. They often carry their own usable effect.
How to Read Your Own Astrocartography Map
Reading a map is not difficult once you have one. However, the order matters.
First, generate your map. A free chart works for the basic view. We list and compare the better tools on the free chart comparison. Also, the symbols and glyphs reference covers the planet symbols if your generated chart is full of glyphs you cannot decode. The printed version includes all forty angle threads and midpoints. Those printed map products at Astrotopographer give you something you can keep on a wall.
Second, find your current city. Look for the closest lines within three hundred miles or five hundred kilometers. Note the planet, and note which of the four angles it is hitting. A Mars AC near your current city is a very different setting from a Mars MC near the same place.
Third, calibrate against your own past. Walk through it honestly. Where did you fall in love? What city did you start a business in? Where did you have the worst year of your life? Match each event to whichever thread you were near at the time. The ones that explain your real history are the ones to trust going forward. By contrast, some do not match. Others conflict with stronger natal aspects. Set those aside until you understand more.
Fourth, plan small first. Try a Mercury-line library before you plan a Jupiter-line move. Also try a Venus-line restaurant before you book the wedding venue. The map is a tool. Trial-run before life decisions.
Fifth, zoom in. The same lines repeat at every scale. Country level, province level, city level, neighborhood level, room of the house. Like a matryoshka doll. The Sun line that runs through your country also runs through specific blocks of your city. Read the full process at the guide to reading your map.
When a Line Does Not Match Your Reality
This happens. Someone reads about a Venus line in their city and they are miserable in that place. Or a Jupiter line that promised expansion delivered the slowest stretch of their career.
A few honest reasons. The natal chart underneath always has the final vote. So a weak Venus in the birth chart does not get rescued by a strong Venus marker. Similarly, a planet at war with three others in the natal chart will carry that tension wherever you put it. Furthermore, transits and progressions also override location for stretches of time. And sometimes a paran masks the marker you were focusing on. Two of them crossing at your latitude can drown out whichever thread you were standing on.
It is not a guarantee. Instead, this practice is one strong input among several. Do not force a line that does not match what you are living. Ask which other factor is bigger. Additionally, the line meanings reference covers the most common mismatch patterns.
A second honest reason. The map gives you the geography, but the birth chart sets the dial on how loudly each planet plays. Say your birth chart has Mars heavily afflicted. Your Mars line is going to feel difficult, no matter where in the world it runs. By contrast, the same Mars line for someone with a smoother Mars in their natal chart would feel almost athletic. The geography is the same. What changes is the person standing in the place.
Astrocartography vs. Relocation Chart
These two get blurred constantly. However, they are not the same tool.
Astrocartography projects the planets in your birth chart onto the world map as longitudinal lines. So you scan the world visually and see which planets affect which places.
By contrast, a relocation chart recalculates your entire natal chart for a new set of coordinates. The planets stay where they were at your birth, but the houses and angles shift to the new location. Therefore the result is a full chart for that new city, readable like any other natal chart.
Use astrocartography when you want a wide view of the world and where to focus your attention. Meanwhile, use a relocation chart when you have narrowed down to one or two cities and want the deep read. We use both for the custom written reports. Additionally, the relocation chart page goes deeper on the relocation calculation method.
When to Work With an Astrocartography Practitioner
A free chart and a printed map will get most people what they need. You can self-read your astrocartography map. Calibrate against your own past. Plan small and trust the rest to time.
However a custom written report makes sense when you have a specific question. Should you move from Boston to Austin. Will the Bali sabbatical be the right break or the wrong one. Whether the new agency belongs in the city you live in or three thousand miles away. The right neighborhood for the second kid. How to choose between three job-offer places, and which of the lines through those cities matters most. Specific questions about specific places. Answered by hand against your real birth chart. Also against the layers of astrology that sit under the geographic read.
I write each report myself. No templates. Furthermore, no mass-generated paragraphs. The report is shorter than a 90-minute reading. It tends to be more useful. You can read it again six months later and still extract from it.
Want just the visual? The printed map products at Astrotopographer cover the world, country, state and city layers. That includes the love and partnership read on the dedicated love and soulmate lines page. By contrast, if you want the interpretation, the custom reports page is where to start. There is no pressure. My part is to offer. Your part is to refuse or agree.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is astrocartography?
Accurate enough to be useful, never to be deterministic. People who calibrate it against their past experience tend to find it lines up cleanly. By contrast, those who treat it as prediction get disappointed. So it is a framework, not a forecast. Test it against your own life first. Say three or four major events match the threads you were on at the time. The framework is reading you correctly. However, if nothing matches, the natal chart is likely overriding the geographic layer for your specific configuration.
Does a planetary line stop being effective after a certain distance?
Roughly three hundred miles, or five hundred kilometers, is the practical orb. Inside that range it is strong. Outside it, weaker. There is no hard wall. The further out you go, the less the planet shows up. Past about a thousand kilometers, the influence is mostly background noise relative to whichever threads are closer.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Then the astrocartography map is rough. Planets move about one degree every four minutes. Ten minutes off can be several hundred kilometers of error on the world map. The fix is birth time rectification, calculated backwards from major life events by a specialist. I refer this work out. However, a birth time within an hour still works as a directional read. Just not for precise neighborhood-level decisions.
Can I have multiple lines in the same city?
Yes. Most cities will have two or three threads running through them, sometimes more. This is where the matryoshka effect helps. Zoom into the city and they spread out across neighborhoods. The block matters, not just the city name. Furthermore, two people living in the same city on different sides of a marker can have very different experiences of that place.
Is astrocartography different from relocation astrology?
Astrocartography is one technique within relocation astrology. Specifically, relocation astrology is the umbrella. The relocation chart is the other major tool in that umbrella. See the relocation chart for the distinction in detail.
Do I need to physically visit a line to feel its effects?
Yes for the strongest reading. The marker operates on the planet’s geographic position. Visiting it puts you in the energy. By contrast, reading about it gives you the prediction. Living near it for a season is the most useful test. The effects often take several weeks to settle in. They rarely show up the first day.
How do paran lines work?
A paran occurs when two threads cross at the same latitude at the horizon. The compound effect can amplify both planets, or it can hybridize into something neither carries alone. Therefore, paran crossings tend to be more intense than ordinary stretches. The paran lines guide covers the specifics, including which paran combinations to approach carefully.
Should I move based on my astrocartography map?
Never on the map alone. So the map is one input. Career, relationships, finances, family, visa logistics, climate, all matter. The map is best at telling you what a place will probably feel like. Use it as a filter, not as the decision-maker. People who relocate purely on a chart often end up making the move twice.
Where can I get a free astrocartography chart?
The free chart comparison lists the better free tools and explains what each one shows. So a free chart gives you the visual layout of your astrocartography lines. However it does not give you the interpretation or the midpoints. No practitioner detail either. That comes from sitting with someone who has spent years reading these charts. Start with free if you are exploring. Then move to the printed map when you want something you can keep on a wall and refer back to for years.
Where should I travel in astrocartography?
Start with the benefic threads inside reach of your budget. Venus and Jupiter crossings make the easiest first trips. Mercury suits a study trip. My rule stays simple. Test a place for a week before you test it for a year. Furthermore, the nearest strong crossing on your astrocartography map beats the exotic one almost every time.
Can astrocartography change how I plan a trip?
Yes, and it changes the reason more than the destination. Pick a Venus city for the anniversary week. Choose a Saturn city for the work retreat. Same two weeks off, very different outcomes. Also, the effect shows up faster on short trips than most people expect.
Is the AC the same as the rising sign?
Same point, two names. The Ascendant is the rising sign of your birth chart, the degree climbing over the eastern horizon at birth. Astrocartography then stretches that point across the world. So your AC threads mark where the energy meets your body and your first impression. The AC, DC, MC and IC lines page carries the longer version.
Does the Midheaven reveal my life purpose?
It reveals the public shape of the work, not the whole purpose. The MC sits on the tenth house cusp, the highest point of your chart at birth. Career, reputation, what strangers think you do. Geographically, your MC threads show which cities put that work on display. A quiet purpose still runs far from every MC crossing.
Where should each zodiac sign live?
Sun-sign relocation lists are entertainment. Two Capricorns born a year apart get completely different geography, because the planets sat in different places. Your own chart decides, never your sign. That said, the sign behind each thread does color how it feels. The best places to live covers the planning end.
Are there days you should not travel, according to astrology?
Plenty of traditions publish unlucky travel dates. Astrocartography does not work that way. It answers where, never when. Timing belongs to transits and progressions running against your chart, which is a separate calculation. For a move, the destination matters far more to me than the departure date.
Which planet rules travel?
Mercury takes the short trips and the errands. Jupiter takes the long ones, the foreign languages, the places that need a visa. In the chart wheel, the third house covers local movement and the ninth covers distance. Astrocartography folds both into geography instead of houses.
Do any astrocartography lines point to money?
No thread guarantees income. However, Jupiter and Venus crossings on the MC often sit under the cities where people earn well. Saturn MC builds slower money that lasts. Wealth still comes from what you do once you are there. J.P. Morgan put it as billionaires using astrology. He never said the astrology did the work.
What does the Lilith line represent in astrocartography?
Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point rather than a body. Everyone has one. Its threads mark the places where you stop performing, for better and for worse. Blunt speech, refused compromise, sometimes exile. See the Lilith line for the full read.
Is there an astrocartography calculator that explains what it draws?
Several tools draw the threads free. Almost none explain what they drew. The free chart comparison covers which ones are worth opening. Then the software and apps guide covers the paid ones. Interpretation is still the part you learn or buy.
Is Astroclick Travel legit?
Yes, it draws real astrocartography from real ephemeris data. Astro.com has run that tool for decades. The math is sound. Its interpretations stay short and generic, which is the tradeoff with every free generator. Our comparison of the main astrocartography sites puts it beside the rest.
Is Portland a good city for artists?
Depends entirely on whose chart is asking. Portland sits under a soft Neptune thread for some people and under a hard Saturn crossing for others. City reputation is a crowd average. Your geography is personal. Check what runs through Oregon on your own chart before you pack the studio.
What transits indicate a move?
Uranus contacts to the angles move people suddenly. Saturn contacts move them deliberately. A Jupiter transit across the fourth house often shows up as a bigger home. Transits tell you when the door opens. Astrocartography tells you which direction to walk through it.
Bringing Your Astrocartography Map Into Your Daily Life
The map is not a prescription. Instead, it is a layer of awareness laid over geography.
Three small ways to start. Pick a meeting location this week on a line that fits the meeting. Mercury for the conversation, Venus for the relationship talk, Jupiter for the pitch. Try a weekend trip to one of the closest places where your stronger lines run. Also walk through your own city for an hour with the local-space map. See which blocks feel different now that you know what is there. Furthermore, the best places to live covers the planning end. By contrast, local space astrology covers the city-block scale.
Astrocartography does not work like horoscopes. So it does not predict next week. Instead, it tells you what the geographic floor is for any place you can reach. The rest is yours.
One thing worth saying out loud. Most of the places in your astrology will already feel familiar before you see them on a map. People often describe arriving in a city and feeling like the place already knew them. That is your birth chart meeting geography. The astrocartography lines just make the meeting visible. Use the map to find the right places for the questions in your life now. Save the harder questions for later. More places and more events will stack up. Your own pattern in this part of astrology gets easier to read.
I am still on my Pluto line. Plus or minus. The transformation continues, one place and a few new lines at a time.
