Locational Astrology: The Local Space Lines Inside Your City
A coffee shop on Kensington Road in Calgary is where I met my former fiancée. The building still stands there. Two of my lines cross within those few blocks, Venus and Sun almost on top of each other. Years passed before I noticed.
On a world map that crossing reads as one dot over one city. Useless for picking a street.
My name is Grigor. Fifteen years of chart study sit behind this page. Local space astrology came to me last. It turned out to be the tool I reach for most inside my own city. Locational astrology is the umbrella term above it. Every method that ties a chart to a place lives under that phrase.
Locational Astrology Is the Umbrella Term
Astrologers reach for three separate tools when someone asks about place. Wikipedia files all three under locational astrology. So does astro.com, which is where most people first meet the word. All three chase one worry. Which places in the world actually suit me?
Astrocartography is the famous one. Jim Lewis built the method in 1979. Your planets get projected onto the globe as curves. Rising in one place, setting in another, overhead somewhere else.
A relocation chart does something different. It recalculates your whole natal chart for new coordinates. House cusps shift. Aspects hold.
Local space is the third tool. Also the least discussed. Michael Erlewine worked it out in the 1970s at Matrix Software. His question was simpler than what Lewis asked. Which compass direction does each planet sit in, measured from wherever you happen to be standing?
What a Local Space Chart Actually Plots
Azimuth is the whole mechanic. Easier than the word sounds, too. Your birth chart is the only input. Nothing else feeds the calculation.
Stand at your birthplace. Look up. Every planet in your natal chart sat somewhere in that sky at the moment you were born. Each one carried a compass bearing, anywhere from 0 to 360 degrees. Local space takes those bearings and pulls them outward as straight lines from the point where you stand.
A Jupiter bearing might run northeast at 43 degrees. Follow it out of your city and you are traveling your Jupiter direction. Simple as that.
Straight lines, never curves. That single detail separates a local space map from an astrocartography map at a glance. Astrocartography lines bend across the latitudes. Local space lines instead radiate out like spokes on a wheel.
There are no angle lines in this system either. No AC or MC in local space. The bearing itself carries the whole meaning, which is why the technique feels stripped down next to the world map.
Why Local Space Lines Move and Astrocartography Lines Do Not
Here is the property that makes the technique useful. Almost nobody explains it properly.
Recenter the chart. Your astrocartography lines never move, no matter where you live. Birth data already pins them to the globe permanently. Local space lines re-radiate from whatever point you choose to draw from.
So I can pull my bearings out of Almaty, where I was born. I can also pull them out of Calgary, where I have lived for nine years. Same angles, different origin. Two cities, one identical set of bearings. My Venus direction still runs at the identical bearing, though it now crosses a completely different set of neighborhoods.
That is the matryoshka idea applied at city scale. One bigger picture holds a smaller one inside it. Lines stay constant. Then only the location changes.
My Calgary Local Space Map, Line by Line
Nine years in one city produced a lot of test data. Here is my own local space map, with the events still attached to it.
Venus and Sun Through Kensington
Kensington Road holds the crossing from the top of this page. Both bearings sit close together, running through a stretch of maybe six blocks.
That coffee shop is where I met my fiancée. Love questions bring most people to Venus first. Relationships are the usual reason anyone opens a map at all. My best friend now lives out along the same Sun bearing, over near Lindsey Park. Neither of those was planned by me.
My Venus line also explains my haircuts, which sounds trivial until you try booking one. Two or three barbers sit on that bearing in Calgary. Every one of them books out for months. Seven months of trying went by last year before a chair opened. Best haircut of my life, and the shop looked rough from the street.
My current hairdresser works on 9th Avenue, roughly halfway between the Venus and Sun bearings. Midpoints also function well. That took me a while to accept.
Pluto Through East Village
67 14th Avenue is where I opened a coffee shop. Straight onto my Pluto line. Every dollar of savings went into that place. We closed the doors the next day.
A court case followed after that. I won it. The other party let their company die slowly instead of paying. Nobody ever paid me.
I was living at 14th and 14th at the time, right across from the church. Also on the Pluto bearing. I am still living plus or minus on that line today. Still transforming, apparently.
Mars, Jupiter and Uranus Near the Airport
Northeast of downtown, three bearings bunch together near Calgary International. My mechanic works out there, sitting on the Mars and Jupiter combination. He still almost never leaves the shop. Big luck stacked on big mechanisms suits a garage.
Uranus runs directly through the airport itself. Aviation is exactly what Uranus rules. I did not arrange any of that. The confluence is too clean for me to ignore.
Mercury Toward the University
Calgary’s main university sits squarely on my Mercury bearing. I went to a different school, Mountain Trail, which falls between Jupiter and Pluto with Pluto dominant. Big transformation there. Learned my English fundamentals. Lost some things too.
Mercury would have been the better call for study. Career questions run through Mercury and Jupiter in my chart. The lines were not on my radar at 24. That is the cost of finding this work late.
Reading Houses in a Local Space Chart
Erlewine connected local space to feng shui early on. The link still holds up better than I expected.
A local space chart carries the same twelve houses as any horoscope. Most practitioners also read them the ordinary way. The interesting part starts when you shrink the map further, down to a floor plan.
Lay the bearings over your apartment. Whatever sits in your Mercury direction becomes the natural spot for a desk. Neptune direction suits sleep. A washroom on Neptune is fine; a bedroom on Neptune is better.
People ask whether any of this is real or just decorating with extra steps. My answer stays the same. Test it for two weeks and watch what changes. Moving a desk costs nothing, after all.
The Node Line and the Direction Question
Node bearings get asked about more than anything else in my inbox. Both nodes carry an azimuth, same as the planets do.
North Node points where you came here to go. South Node runs the opposite bearing, 180 degrees away. That one feels comfortable in a way worth suspecting.
I have felt the pull twice. Belize once, visited without much of a plan. Armenia, where my father’s family comes from. Not dramatic lines by any measure. Karmic ones, if that word does not put you off.
What Local Space Astrology Cannot Tell You
Straight talk about the limits, because the calculator sites will not give you any.
Birth time drives everything here. Ten minutes of error shifts a bearing by a couple of degrees. Across a city that is a few blocks. Over a continent it becomes hundreds of miles.
No certification exists in this field. Nobody can hand you a credential in local space astrology, myself included. I read every published book on the subject instead. That took less time than you would think. So few of them exist. Free chart tools will draw the bearings for you. They will not tell you what any bearing means for your particular chart.
Astrology is not science by official labels, and I will not pretend otherwise. The confluences pile up too high for me to walk away from, though. Don’t believe me. Go test a direction yourself.
How I Draw These Lines on a Printed Map
Every map leaving Astrotopographer gets developed and printed by me. Nothing is dropshipped. The city view is the one people frame, because the world view is beautiful while the city view is usable.
Digital maps run $179, which covers a local map plus a global one. Printed maps are $269 at 24 by 36 inches. The All-in-One bundle sits at $449 and carries both formats with shipping included.
Questions about a specific street or a specific move go into a custom written report. I write those by hand. No templates involved. Call bookings do not exist here, because that is not the business I run.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is locational astrology?
An umbrella term, covering every branch of astrology that connects a chart to a place. Astrocartography sits under it. So do relocation charts and local space work. Astro.com groups all of them on one page, which is partly why the phrase confuses beginners.
What does local space astrology mean?
Compass bearings, drawn from wherever you stand. Each planet in your natal chart held a direction in the sky at your birth moment. Local space turns those directions into straight lines across a map of your city or your home.
How does local space differ from astrocartography?
Different geometry entirely. Astrocartography plots where planets went angular across the whole globe, so those curves stay fixed forever. Local space plots compass bearings from a chosen point, so the lines re-radiate every time you move that point. One works at world scale. The other works at street scale.
How do you interpret a local space chart?
Start with events you already lived through. Find the address where something significant happened to you. Check which bearing runs through it. Doing that calibrates the planet meanings against your own history before you use them to plan anything. Reading the line meanings first helps.
How do houses work in a local space chart?
Twelve houses, same as any chart, though most of the practical work happens on the bearings instead. Room placement is where the houses earn their keep. Put the desk on Mercury. The bed goes on Neptune or Moon.
What does the node line mean in local space astrology?
North Node marks the direction of growth. South Node runs exactly opposite, 180 degrees away. Traveling your North Node bearing tends to feel unfamiliar and slightly forced. That discomfort is usually the point.
Where will the nodes be in 2026?
Transiting nodes change signs roughly every eighteen months. Through 2026 they left the Pisces and Virgo axis for Aquarius and Leo. None of that touches your local space map though. Your node bearings come from the birth moment instead. They hold the same compass angles for life. The lunar nodes page covers the natal side.
Can I use local space lines inside my house?
House scale works well. Most people underuse it badly. Center the chart on your address and the bearings fan out through your rooms. My own desk sits on Mercury. Whether that helps my writing is not something I can prove to you.
Do local space lines work over long distances?
They extend as far as you follow them, in theory. Practice gets messier. Bearings that look tight inside a city spread very wide across an ocean. So I trust them most within a few hundred miles. Questions that span the world belong on an astrocartography map instead.
Where can I get a free local space chart?
Astro.com carries a free locational astrology section. Astro-seek runs one too. Both will draw the bearings. Neither will tell you what your Saturn direction means for your particular chart. Free tools give you the visual. Meaning is the part you still have to source somewhere.
Should I move based on my local space map?
Not on the map alone. I treat it the way I treat a second news source. It adds one layer to a decision you were already weighing. Rent and family and work all sit inside the question of where to live. A bearing knows nothing about any of those.
What shows your soulmate in your birth chart?
Venus and the seventh house carry that question in a natal chart. Local space adds the missing half, which is where. My Venus bearing runs through Kensington. So does the coffee shop where I met my fiancée. A chart names the planet. The bearing names the blocks. More on the split sits on the love and soulmate lines page.
Who is my soulmate according to my birth chart?
No chart hands you a name. Anyone promising one is selling something. A bearing narrows geography instead, which is a smaller claim and a more testable one. Walk your Venus direction for a month. Notice who you keep running into.
Walk the Direction Before You Trust It
Pick one bearing this week. Places you already know will read differently afterward. Drive it or walk it. Book something along it and notice what the day felt like afterward. That is the entire method, repeated until the planet meanings stop being theory for you.
I am still doing it myself. Nine years in Calgary and I keep finding blocks I have never tested.
