Lunar Nodes in Astrocartography: North Node and South Node Lines

Belize was a trip I almost canceled. I went anyway. Something in that country kept a hand on my shoulder for the whole week. There was no name for it at the time.

Years later I put my own chart on a world map and found the reason. My north node line runs through Belize. It also runs close to where my father’s family comes from, in Armenia. Two places I never chose on purpose. Both of them pulled.

I am Grigor. Fifteen years of studying astrology sit behind this page, most of the recent ones inside astrocartography specifically. No certification exists in this field, so nobody handed me a badge. I read the books instead. There are not many of them.

This page covers the lunar nodes end to end. What they are. How the lines get drawn. Then both nodes across all four angles, one cell at a time. The wider framework sits on the astrocartography pillar.

Belize and Armenia, Two Pulls I Did Not Plan

Karmic lines is the phrase I keep returning to for the nodes. Not crazy lines. Nothing dramatic either.

A Venus line announces itself. You get the good haircut. Somebody interesting turns up. The day goes well and you notice. A lunar node line does something quieter. It puts you in a place that feels like it was already waiting for you.

Belize did that to me once. Armenia does it through family rather than through travel, since I have never lived there. My father’s people are from that country. That branch of the family sits almost exactly on the same line.

Two data points prove nothing. I know that. Fifteen years of checking charts against real events has taught me to distrust a single coincidence and take a repeated one seriously.

What I felt in both places was pull, not comfort. There is a difference. It matters more on the nodes than anywhere else on a map. Comfort says stay. Pull says go, without telling you why yet.

What the Lunar Nodes Actually Are

Neither node is a planet. That surprises people more than it should.

The Moon’s orbit tilts about five degrees against the path the Sun appears to take. Two points exist where those circles cross. Astronomers call them the ascending and descending nodes. Astrology calls them the north node and the south node.

They sit exactly opposite each other. That never varies. Move one and the other moves with it, 180 degrees away. That single fact explains most of what follows on this page.

Meaning got attached to these points a long time ago. The north node carries direction and growth, the unfamiliar work you came here to do. Its opposite carries the familiar. Old habits. Skills you already have. The comfort you can fall back into without effort.

Vedic astrology calls them Rahu and Ketu and treats them as shadow planets with real teeth. Western astrology softened that considerably. My own reading sits between the two. The nodes are not gentle, though they are not violent either.

None of this is scientifically proven. Astrology is not science by official labels. The confluences pile up anyway. Fifteen years in, I stopped explaining them away. The Moon itself carries home and emotions, which is a different job entirely, covered on the Moon line page.

How Node Lines Get Drawn on a Map

Jim Lewis worked out the projection method in 1979 and built the first software for it. Every modern tool still runs on his approach. Your birth chart gets stretched across a world map. Each body picks up four lines, one for each angle.

The nodes work the same way. North node on the ascendant somewhere. On the descendant somewhere else. Midheaven and imum coeli fill in the other two. Eight node lines in total, four per node.

Three inputs decide whether any of it is usable. Date of birth. Place of birth. Time of birth, which is the one people guess at.

Planets move roughly one degree every four minutes. Ten minutes of error slides a line a few hundred kilometers sideways. A rounded birth time gives you a direction rather than an address.

Programs disagree about the south node. Several plot only the north node, since the south sits at the exact opposite point and can be inferred from it. That is a design choice, not an astrological argument. Free chart tools vary on this more than on any other feature. Reading what comes out is its own skill, covered on how to read your astrocartography map.

North Node Lines on the Four Angles

The angle changes the job more than the node does. I would go further than that. A north node midheaven city and a north node IC city have almost nothing in common except the direction of travel. Full angle mechanics live on the AC, DC, MC and IC page.

North Node on the Ascendant (AC)

Some programs label this one the AS line. Same thing.

Identity belongs to the ascendant, so this line lands on how you show up. People here meet a version of you that has not finished forming. Roughly six months of discomfort is what clients report. Then it stops being uncomfortable.

They describe the north node AC line as the place where they became someone slightly different. New name for the same person. Learning happens fast in these cities. So does exposure, which not everyone wants.

The relocation chart version of this puts the north node in or near your first house.

North Node on the Descendant (DC)

The descendant sits opposite the ascendant, so it covers other people. Partners and close collaborators. The occasional open opponent.

North node DC cities tend to bring relationships that push. Not easy relationships necessarily. A partner you meet here asks something of you that your usual circle never asks.

This is the combination people search for most on Tumblr and Reddit, usually phrased as a question about meeting somebody. My straight answer is that the line raises the odds of a formative connection. It says nothing about romance specifically.

North Node on the Midheaven (MC)

Career and public life belong to the midheaven. The north node here points your work in a direction you have not tried.

I watch this line pull people into a field next door to their training. The accountant who ends up teaching. A nurse who moves into policy. Visibility comes with it, sometimes faster than the person is ready for.

Money often dips first on this line. Then it recovers past where it started. That order shows up often enough that I mention it before anybody books a flight.

North Node on the Imum Coeli (IC)

Home, family and roots live at the bottom of a chart. The north node IC line asks you to build a base somewhere unfamiliar.

Immigrants land on this line more often than chance would suggest. I moved from Almaty to Calgary at twenty-four. That taught me what a foreign base feels like, long before I understood any of this.

Expect the first two years to feel like construction work. The house is not there yet. You are still pouring the foundation.

South Node Lines on the Four Angles

Everything the north node lacks, the south node already has. That is the trade. Familiarity in exchange for momentum. Karmic baggage is the usual description online, though not one of these four lines is a punishment.

South Node on the Ascendant (AC)

You arrive and people seem to know you already. That is the reliable report from this line. Old habits return quickly here, the good ones and the ones you retired on purpose.

Rest works well on a south node AC line. So does recovery from something. Ambition does not. Clients who move here for a career reason tell me within a year that the drive went quiet.

South Node on the Descendant (DC)

Familiar people show up. Sometimes literally, in the shape of an old friend who happens to live in that city.

Relationships on this line feel effortless at the start and repetitive by the middle. The pattern you keep repeating in partnerships gets a little louder. That is useful information if you want it. It is tiring if you do not.

South Node on the Midheaven (MC)

Your existing skill set pays here. The work you already know how to do gets recognized without much effort behind it.

Momentum is what it costs you. Career growth flattens on a south node MC line, since the environment keeps rewarding what you have already mastered. Consultants and specialists do well here for exactly that reason. The south node holds wisdom you already paid for.

South Node on the Imum Coeli (IC)

Ancestry sits closer to the surface here than anywhere else on a map. People find their grandparents’ villages on this line. Family history turns up without being looked for.

Emotional safety is the strongest quality of the south node IC line. Nothing gets asked of you. That is either a rest or a trap, depending on which year of your life you are in.

The Moon’s Node DS Line, Read Properly

DS is an abbreviation, nothing more. Several programs write the descendant that way. Others use DC. A couple use DSC.

So the moon’s node DS line means one of two things, depending on which point your software plotted. North node on the descendant, or south node on the descendant. Check the color key before interpreting anything.

The descendant axis governs the people you attract and the agreements you make with them. Put the north node there and the map is pointing at partnerships that develop you. Move the south node into that slot and it points at partnerships that soothe you.

I get this question more than any other lunar node question. The label looks technical, so people assume it hides something complicated. It does not. Two letters, one angle, one of two nodes.

Living on a North Node Line

Uphill but productive. That is the summary clients give me, almost word for word, after a year on one of these lines.

Nothing about a north node line feels natural at the start. You are doing the thing you have not practiced. The city asks for a version of you that does not exist yet. Building that version takes real effort.

The rewards run behind the effort by a year or two. First comes disorientation. Then competence. Later comes a stretch where things you tried for years elsewhere start working. Clarity arrives late on these lines, usually after the hard part.

Not everybody wants that trade. A woman who wrote to me last year had a north node MC line running through a city she disliked on sight. She stayed where she was. That was the right call for her, and I said so.

Twenty years ago we managed fine without Google Maps. We still got where we were going. The map only shows the traffic and the walls in advance.

When the South Node Line Is the Right Choice

Grief. Illness. The year after a divorce. Those are the times I point people toward their south node without hesitation.

Momentum is not always the goal. Sometimes a person needs a place where nothing is demanded and old skills carry the weight for a while. The south node line does that better than any other line on a map.

Writers use it well too. So do people finishing long projects that need no new input.

The failure mode is staying past the point of usefulness. Two years of rest turns into ten years of comfort. Then the comfort stops being restful. I have watched it happen. Nobody notices while it is happening.

Nodes Crossing Other Planetary Lines

Crossings are where a map gets interesting. A lunar node line on its own points a direction. The crossing with another planet’s line tells you what that direction is made of.

North node over a Venus line tends to produce the meeting people hope for. Growth arrives wearing a pleasant face.

North node over a Saturn line is the hardest useful combination I know. Direction plus a bill. Everything works, slowly, at full price.

South node over a Sun line gives vitality back without asking for reinvention. Good for a sabbatical.

Node over Jupiter widens whatever the point was already doing. A Moon line crossing pulls family history into the picture, often through actual relatives.

Midpoints count too. The band between two lines carries a blend of both, which is a detail most free tools ignore entirely.

How I Read the Nodes on a Printed Map

Color first. Every planet and point on my maps carries its own color. I know what I am looking at before reading a single label. The nodes get their own pair.

Then I zoom. Global first, then country, then province, then city. The lines stay identical at every level. Only the frame changes. A matryoshka doll works the same way.

Then I calibrate against the past. Where did the significant events of your life happen? Which line were you standing on? None of it makes much sense until you answer those two questions.

I develop and print these maps myself. Not a print shop, not a dropship supplier. The printed map is a 24 by 36 inch object meant to stay on a wall for years. Custom written reports get written by hand, one client at a time, from the questions people actually send me.

Nothing here is a reading or a call. I do not do those.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a north node line mean in astrocartography?

Direction. The line marks places where the unfamiliar work of your life gets easier to start, never easier to do. Growth is the trade, comfort is the price. Most people report the effects building over roughly two years.

What is the moon’s node AS line in astrocartography?

AS is the ascendant, written the way several programs abbreviate it. So a moon’s node AS line puts one of the two nodes on your identity angle. North node there reshapes how you present yourself. South node there returns you to an older version.

What does the south node line feel like to live on?

Familiar, immediately. People describe walking into a city and recognizing its rhythm. Effort drops. So does momentum, which is the part nobody warns about. Excellent for recovery, poor for launching anything new.

What does north node conjunct ascendant mean in a relocation chart?

Your relocated first house picks up the node. That carries the same signal as the north node AC line, read through a relocation chart rather than a map. Identity gets rebuilt in that city. Expect to be a slightly different person there.

Is living on the north node line a good idea?

Depends entirely on what stage you are in. Somebody at twenty-eight with energy to spend will usually thrive. A person recovering from a hard three years will find it exhausting. The line does not care about your timing.

How wide is the influence of a node line?

Roughly 300 miles either side, as a working number. I have seen effects reach 400 miles in one chart and stop near 150 in another. Treat the band as a gradient rather than a border.

Do the lunar nodes move on my map?

They do not. Your natal chart is fixed at birth, like a film negative exposed once to light. Transiting nodes move backward through the zodiac and finish a cycle in about 18.6 years. Those transits change timing, never the lines themselves.

Can I find my node lines on a free chart?

Usually, yes. Astro-seek and astro.com both plot the north node, though plenty of tools skip the south node entirely. Free calculators hand you geometry. What they cannot hand you is what that geometry means for your particular chart.

Is there a certification for reading the nodes?

None exists. Astrocartography has no certifying body, since the field is small and only about fifty years old. Anybody selling you a certified astrocartographer credential invented the credential. Depth of study is the only thing worth checking.

Is the north node a generational placement?

Partly true. Both points sit in one sign for eighteen months. Everybody born then shares it. The line is yours alone. Birth time and birthplace decide where it falls.

Where will the lunar nodes be in 2026?

Aquarius and Leo, since late July. Pisces and Virgo held them before that. Your map does not move with them. Transits change timing, never the drawn lines.

Which astrocartography line is best for love?

Venus, usually. Romance belongs to that planet rather than to either lunar point. The love and soulmate lines page compares them. A nodal crossing adds weight, not romance.

What house is associated with the IC?

The fourth. IC marks the base of a chart, opposite the midheaven. Home and ancestry live there. Lines crossing that angle pull family history to the surface.

Is AC the same as rising?

Same angle, yes. Ascendant and rising sign name one point. AC and AS are only labels.

Still Feeling the Pull

I still have not been back to Belize. It comes up every winter, then something else takes the money.

Armenia is the one I keep circling. Same line, different reason. My father’s family is from there. I have never stood on that ground.

The maps do not tell you where to go. They tell you what is there. Whether you pack is your part.
